Polls and Stats |
By 1965 the Beatles had already become world-famous,
even before they had produced the bulk of their classic material. What came
next was a proliferation of pop-rock gems (starting around Help!) that remains
unrivaled to this day.
Sgt. Peppers had long been regaled in various polls as "the greatest
album of all time", but when the Beatles catalog was re-issued in CD
format, that all started to change. (The U.S. releases of Rubber Soul and
Revolver had only 12 and 11 cuts respectively).
Evidently, the inclusion of "I'm Only Sleeping", "And Your
Bird Can Sing" and "Doctor Robert" on CD put Revolver over
the top. Indeed in many polls Revolver was catapult to #1. The addition
of "Nowhere Man" and "If I Needed Someone" was enough
to place Rubber Soul above Sgt. Peppers in some polls too.
Amazingly, these two albums produced no Number 1 singles. "Nowhere
Man" peaked at Number 3 on the Billboard charts, 5 months later "Yellow
Submarine" hit the top 10, and shortly thereafter "Eleanor Rigby"
reached the sacred Number 11. In between these albums "Paperback Writer"/"Rain"
charted as an A side/B side single.
